The gold dinar of Damesek (Damascus) (696–697 CE)

(Damascus) refers to the seminal gold coinage minted in Damascus, Syria, which served as the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate. Most notably, this includes the historic post-reform gold dinar introduced by Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan in AH 77 (696–697 CE).

This coin is widely celebrated as the first truly Islamic gold coin. Prior to its creation, the early Muslim world relied heavily on Byzantine gold solidi or modified imitations that retained Christian iconography.

The Damesek dinar completely broke away from this tradition by removing all images, replacing them entirely with Arabic epigraphy.

The word dinar comes from the Latin word denarius, which was a silver coin. The name "dinar" is also used for Sassanid, Kushan, and Kimarite gold coins, though it is not known what the contemporary name was.

The first dinars were issued by the Umayyad Caliphate. Under the dynasties that followed the use of the dinar spread from Islamic Spain to Central Asia

The record-high auction sale for an early Islamic Umayyad gold dinar is £3,720,000 (approximately $4.78 to $6.01 million USD depending on exchange rates at the time), achieved for a rare variant minted in AH 105 (723–724 CE)
